About the award

The story so far...

It’s fair to say that the Music Industry Trusts Award has established itself as one of the true benchmarks of achievement and generosity in the British music business, bestowing the respect of peers upon its recipients, while benefiting the good causes that have the industry’s loyalty.

Marking the 20th year in which the award has been presented, our chosen 2011 honouree is Jools Holland, who, has notched up a stellar career over five decades and continues to scale the very highest peaks of the music business, both in the UK and around the world.

The Music Industry Trust Executive Committee was unanimous in its decision to honour Jools Holland, piano player, big band leader, TV presenter, former punk pop-star, deputy Lieutenant of Kent, OBE and undoubted national treasure.

Originally chaired by The Lord Levy, the committee’s reins were taken over in 1996 by David Munns (former Vice Chairman, EMI Recorded Music Worldwide).  He continues to be ably assisted by his deputy chairman, Adam White (VP Communications, Universal Music Group International). A wide cross-section of music industry professionals complete the committee, and, working together, they have ensured that the fundraising dinner is an occasion not to be missed by anyone who matters in the business of music.

The event has been held in the grand surroundings of The Grosvenor House Hotel in London since its creation in 1992, and now attracts more than 1,000 guests each year. Previous award recipients include the first honouree, John Deacon, CBE, Director General of the British Phonographic Industry; composer and entrepreneur Andrew Lloyd Webber; broadcaster Alan "Fluff" Freeman; producer Sir George Martin; Oscar-winning musician/composer John Barry; the co-founder of Atlantic Records, the late Ahmet Ertegun; music retail maven Brian McLaughlin; Sir Elton John and his partner in song, Bernie Taupin; talent finder extraordinaire, Rob Dickins CBE; visionary artist Peter Gabriel; legendary broadcaster and star-maker Michael Parkinson; the quintessential impresario Harvey Goldsmith; the Pop Princess Kylie Minogue; Lucian Grainge, one of the industry’s most successful and influential executives; Jonathan Ross, whose programmes have provided hugely influential exposure for new artists, as well as being a key destination for established musicians from home and abroad; and in 2010, international superstar, Sir Tom Jones.

It is the music industry's loyalty and generosity that has made the Music Industry Trusts Award dinner a highlight of the show-business calendar.  With that commitment and your support, it will continue to raise money for two very worthwhile charities – the BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins – for years to come.
